I enjoyed this writing class so much, Jourdan created an open and supportive environment that made writing and sharing that writing a really nice experience. I didn’t know what to expect going in and thought it would be a lot like other writing classes I had taken before which had always been fine but never left me feeling like creative writing was something I could really do. This class very much changed that. I got very personalized feedback that every step of the way made me feel like my story was worth telling and that I was capable of doing it. She made me feel that she was there to support my writing not change it. There was never a focus on what you did wrong but only on how you could better convey the story you were wanting to tell. I have always struggled with writing, not necessarily putting pen to paper, but from not having an understanding of pivotal concepts, such as; character, plot, and dialog development. Jourdan did an amazing job explaining, providing examples, and offering practical assignments. The skills I have developed in this class are going to allow me to finish the writings I began long ago. I would take this class again in a heartbeat. Jourdan is the kind of teacher we all wished we had in school. She made it clear in the beginning that this wasn’t about grades, or about getting it right. This was about exploring and creating. Jourdan offered supportive and encouraging feedback. I had the privilege of co-teaching a week-long writing workshop with Jourdan. It was definitely the highlight of my summer. I felt more like a student myself than a teacher. Jourdan creates coordinated lessons with high interest and variety. Even though her lessons are built for sequential understanding, they always feel like art class: a time to play, create, and have lots of fun exploring.
